My First Filler Appointment: What I Wish I Had Known

I still remember how nervous I was before my first filler appointment. I had read countless articles, scrolled through Pinterest, and spent hours researching blogs, but somehow nothing felt like it could truly prepare me for the experience.

At the time, the beauty world was deep into the Kardashian era—a time of fuller lips, sculpted cheeks, and a more enhanced version of ourselves. While I wasn’t entirely sure what look I was after, I knew I wanted to explore subtle changes and see what a little extra volume might do for my features.

So, I booked the appointment and walked in with equal parts curiosity and nerves.

Like neurotoxins, fillers are injectable treatments, and if you’re anything like me, needles are not your favorite thing. Despite my fear, I was excited to see the results, and that excitement outweighed the anxiety.

One thing that surprised me was the numbing process. Unlike neurotoxins, fillers are typically performed after a topical numbing cream is applied, making the treatment much more comfortable. There was one exception, though. During one appointment, my injector—a physician—explained that he didn’t use topical numbing because the filler itself contained lidocaine, a numbing agent. He assured me that once the first injection was over, the rest of the treatment would feel no different than if I had been numbed beforehand.

With a deep breath, I trusted him. To my surprise, he was absolutely right.

Even with numbing, you’ll still notice a bit of pressure as the product is placed, but I wouldn’t describe the treatment as painful. What caught me off guard more than anything was the swelling afterward.

Immediately after treatment—and even for a few days—you may love the extra fullness. Just remember that some of what you’re seeing is swelling. As it settles, so will a bit of the volume, leaving behind your true result.

Before my first appointment, I wasn’t sure how much filler I would need. Personally, I’ve only treated my lips, although fillers can also restore volume to areas like the cheeks, chin, jawline, and under-eye area. For me, one syringe has always been more than enough. In fact, during my first few appointments, my injector didn’t even use the entire syringe, and I still loved the results.

I’ve always preferred a softer, natural look—just enough volume to enhance my features without making it obvious that I’ve had anything done.

One question people often ask is, “What happens if you don’t use the entire syringe?”

Fortunately, depending on the product and your provider’s policies, unused filler may be safely stored for a future touch-up. That can make your next appointment a little less expensive—which, if you’re into a little girl math, certainly doesn’t hurt.

Another advantage of fillers is their longevity. While my neurotoxins typically begin to wear off around the two-and-a-half to three-month mark, my fillers last close to a year. Although the upfront investment is greater, I’ve found the overall value to be well worth it.

As with any cosmetic treatment, choosing an experienced injector you trust is the most important decision you’ll make. A thoughtful consultation, honest conversation about your goals, and realistic expectations are what lead to beautiful, balanced results.

Whether you’re interested in the most subtle enhancement or a more noticeable transformation, fillers can be an excellent option when approached thoughtfully.

For me, they’ve become part of my long-term skincare and beauty routine. As I’ve gotten older, my goal has never been to look like someone else or to chase perfection. I simply want to look like the healthiest, most refreshed version of myself.

And if a little filler helps me feel more confident when I look in the mirror, I’m perfectly happy with that.
